5 Root Canal Myths — Debunked by a Dentist

Root canals have a reputation for being painful and scary — but most of what people believe is outdated or simply wrong. Here is the truth.

Myth 1: Root canals are extremely painful. Reality: Modern root canal treatment is performed under local anesthesia and is generally no more uncomfortable than getting a filling. Most patients report that the tooth pain before the procedure — caused by infection — is far worse than the treatment itself.

Myth 2: It is better to extract the tooth than get a root canal. Reality: Saving your natural tooth is almost always the better option. A missing tooth can cause bone loss, shifting of adjacent teeth, and bite problems. Root canal treatment saves the tooth structure and preserves jaw health.

Myth 3: Root canals cause illness. Reality: This myth stems from outdated, debunked research from the 1920s. Modern scientific consensus confirms that root canal treatment is safe and does not cause systemic disease.

Myth 4: A root canal kills the tooth. Reality: The procedure removes the infected pulp (nerve tissue) from inside the tooth, but the tooth remains alive in the jaw, supported by the surrounding bone and ligaments.

Myth 5: You only need a root canal if you have a toothache. Reality: Some teeth that need root canal treatment cause no pain at all — especially when the nerve has already died. Regular X-rays can detect infection before symptoms appear, making earlier treatment possible.
